The pain of reinstalling a computer

When I say pain I do mean pain, the process has stressed me out and left me with a mild headache, which has made me feel worse about the whole thing.

As a general rule I do my best to avoid reinstalling a computer — it’s something I’ve had to do a number of times over the years, either because I built myself a new computer, or because something went wrong, and I have never found it an enjoyable experience.

The latest re-installation has been no more fun than any of the others I have been through. It all started because my laptop started going slow. Now I’ll admit the hard drive was pretty full with TV eps and films I had downloaded, which almost certainly contributed to it, but I haven’t been happy with my computer’s performance for a while now.

I quite literally have the most powerful computer I have ever owned at this moment in time, yet it runs no quicker (quite often slower) than other computers I have owned, and I put a lot of this down to Windows 10, an operating system I have never liked.

My current laptop is a store bought system that came with Windows 10 pre-installed, along with whatever other rubbish Asus decided to include and which is incredibly hard to either find or remove.

I have wanted to re-install the computer for a while now, but I wanted to go back to either Windows 7 or 8, operating systems I had no problem with. Unfortunately I haven’t been able to find a copy of either OS for sale from a supplier I could trust to give me a working activation code.

A few days ago I decided to bite the bullet and buy a copy of Windows 10 so I could re-install the laptop with a clean version of the OS that didn’t have Asus’ additions, or any of the other junk that had accumulated.

Before I could do that, however, I had to move off the laptop all the file I wanted to keep — that took me a solid day; did I mention that I had a hard drive full of TV eps and films. Once that was done I was able to start re-installing, which takes a relatively short time, thankfully, and then the real work began.

No matter how many times I have done this I still find myself forgetting to reinstall some of the programs I use, only discovering their absence when I want to use them. Worse than that, though…
