Glovers Reef Atoll in Belize

Belize is packed with natural marine beauty. Along with the Belize Barrier Reef, which is the world’s second-largest, Belize has numerous other reefs, cayes, and atolls. Who Discovered It?

The atoll was originally found and settled by Mayas who arrived from the Belize mainland, which was the heart of their empire in ancient times. As mentioned above, it was frequented by pirates back in the 1750s. One such pirate was named John Glover, and that’s where the atoll gets its name.

What Does It Look Like?

The atoll has been described as a coral wonderland and a rainbow lagoon. It has over 700 coral patches visible in shallow, clear water. The atoll itself spans only 18 miles in length and six miles in width, so it’s easy to see the entire thing. However, not far away is the extremely deep ocean drop in the Caiman Trench. It’s the deepest in the world at 15,000 feet. There are four very small islands on the windward side of the Glover’s Reef Atoll. These islands are Southwest Caye, Middle Caye, Long Caye, and Northeast Caye.
