Life is Long if You Know How to Use It

As the year comes to a close, we should take an audit of how it went. Taking some time to reflect on the year can help us decide if we should stay on the same track or shake some things up. Time is the scarcest resource we have; once it is gone, it’s gone forever. So we have to make sure we are the least wasteful with our time.

For me, I’m working on my businesses, trying to see friends and family when I can, and taking time work on myself. If I got hit by a bus tomorrow, I would be okay with it because I did all that I could do with my time on this planet.

I’m not working as Federal Employee anymore, and I don’t have to worry about government shutdown affecting me. I’m happy to work on Grow With Joe because it gives me purpose and control over my day. The trade-off is that being in business for yourself means working 60 hours for yourself at the beginning, so you don’t have to work 40 hours for someone else. You also have to figure out your benefits and navigate issues like worker’s comp and paying your taxes. I get much satisfaction in teaching folks how to become better versions of themselves and dealing with admin stuff is easier when you’re doing what you want to do in life.

One of my favorite parts of 2018 was going to a high school in Maryland that serves underprivileged teenagers (Mostly Latino) and teaching five different classes of freshman, that where you are in life, is not who you can be in life, and you can grow into the type of person you want to be by focusing on growing your physical, mental, spiritual, and emotional self.

By doing this, you can be more productive and cut the waste out of your life. Getting an extra 5 hours a week can give you that edge to go to the gym to get stronger, read a book to get wiser, or spend time with friends and family.

We can’t manage everything, so we need to prioritize which tasks we should focus on first. It is easier to go with the flow and do whatever is in front of us, but is it the best thing you can do with your time?

There is no second chance at life, so let’s make wise choices for how we use our day. We are all going to die one day, so it is essential to understand how to live life but also how to prepare for death. Understanding death has caused me to work harder but also to take time to enjoy the present, since all we have now is the present. I was in a severe car accident when I was in high school, and it was one of the worst experiences in my life because I let my parents down, but I’m glad nothing serious happened to my friend or me. I try to make sure I’m not disrespectful with my time because I know one day I’m going to die and I don’t want to have any regrets on my death bed.

I don’t want to feel like someone has power over me, because that means that I’m following their agenda instead of mine and I want control over my life. If spending time with family is important, then create a system that allows spending time with them. If you want financial security, then create a system that provides you that feeling. Just take control over your life and time.

As Seneca wrote about 2000 years ago, “Life is long if you know how to use it.” So what things are you going to do today, this week, this month, this upcoming year to make it a long life?

Don’t forget
