Which Writers Are We?

The fruit of our labor should not necessarily be money

The topic is making me itch. Especially when I see some of the writers I like speaking out on the issue, namely writing on Medium and the fact that the platform doesn’t return enough dollars to our bank account for us to enjoy and prosper from our prose.

As I turned everything over in my head, I came to ask myself these questions: Why do we create? Why do we write? I had written a few lines on the matter about two years ago, you can read the story. The reasons why I write are still the same, the difference is that I have changed therapist.

Today, some writers (the ones I consider as such, in addition to the others) seem to be getting frustrated with the fact that Medium doesn’t pay us properly, that Medium doesn’t give us the right stories to read, that medium does not give enough visibility to our stories, that Medium doesn’t let us fill up on gas, that Medium doesn’t let us buy our dream house, that Medium this, and that Medium that.

Not a day goes by without a new writer taking a shot at the platform, complaining that it’s become a dead place and there’s nothing left to be gained. It would be a lie to say that all of these claims are to be thrown out the window, but I think these people are revolting for the wrong reasons.

As you know, I don’t write here to make my bank account grow. I’m lucky, when in fact I am not because the 9–5 job that allows me to live didn’t just magically fall into my lap, I don’t expect writing on Medium allows me to fill my fridge and pay my rent.

We need to find another way to support ourselves, even if it’s harder said than done. I am not one of the rich and I would…
