Departure of handshakes! What would be the new professional global gesture?

While humanity is faced with the challenge of coronavirus, which has claimed more than 10,030 lives (as I write on 20.03.20), handshakes have now become notorious globally.

This is high time for us now to revise our habits of touch.

What are we looking to replace?

Let’s find out healthier ways of greeting-

Touching just yourself:

1. Namaste: India

2. Put your right palm on your heart: Malaysia-

3. Clap your Hands-

No-touching at all:

4. A bow: Japan-

It is an elegant way which is broadly of two types- bowing while kneeling and bowing while standing. The second type seems more suitable for the professional world. The deeper the bow, the more respect, and submission are reflected.

5. Adaab-

An Islamic way of greeting used by South Asian Muslims is an elegant way to greet with no touching at all.

6. Waving

Simple and sweet back and forth movement of hand! It can be a little vague way to greet as we have been using it as a signaling sign as well other than goodbyes and hellos.

7. Vulcan Salute: The Star Trek way

This might not be very professional, but I couldn’t resist bringing it here. A bit difficult to follow, but definitely a fun way to greet!

8. Dap Greetings like Fist-bump, Elbow-bump, and High-five-

Finally, as salt is to food, a smile is to gesture. Smiling is healthy and the warmest and welcoming non-verbal gesture. Sprinkling some of it on any other gesture might crack the deal in your favor. In fact, handshakes never were enough without a smile.

Whatever would be the new global gesture, going away from handshakes is good for the global public health beyond coronavirus pandemic!
