What makes a good League of Legends player?

League of Legends has been around since 27/10/2009 and one of the most common questions asked is “how do I climb the ranked ladder?”. Of course there is already a tonne of advice out there;

But of course all of this is easier said than done, and even when you “know” all of these things that others continue to talk about, it’s extremely hard to consistently apply this. Especially if you’re currently plateaued and feel like you have no control over the outcome of a game.

Since season 2018 is about to start, I wanted to take some time out to first of all try and define what actually makes a great LoL player. The goal is to provide a basis with which you can measure yourself on and identify where you might be lacking or what area to tackle for the most improvement.

Where do you have the most room for improvement?

In the above diagram I have broken down LoL into three core skills,

*Note the above skill contribution is for Solo queue only, communication & attitude become a lot more important when we move into the competitive 5 v 5 space. (upcoming Clash and esports teams).

Now as you can see, I believe League of Legends is influenced by Game Knowledge & Awareness more than anything else (especially in solo queue). Generally in LoL once you know how to do something, with a bit of practice you can probably pull it off, e.g. Insec, Jarvan E->Q->flash etc. Most combos really don’t take more than three or 4 button presses. Compare this to a fighting game or a physical sport and you will see that mechanics, being able to physically pull off the move, is significantly less demanding.

Think about when you die or lose games, you will find that most of the time it’s not that you made the right play but couldn’t execute. More often than not you just didn’t make the right decision or play in the first place, e.g. overstaying, trading when you aren’t quite sure where the jungler is etc.

So with all this in mind, I hope you agree that the most important area to focus on to improve at League of Legends is your Game Knowledge & Awareness. In future posts I will dive deeper into the macro and micro of League of Legends and hopefully give you insight into how you can reach new heights in 2018.

Thanks for reading and let me know what you think! Do you agree with what I have said?
