Can Social Media Impact The World?

Social media plays a large role into how we dress, what we eat, and what we do however, how far can it take us.

Essentially everyone is on some form of social media whether that be Instagram, Twitter, Tik Tok, or Facebook. As these social media platforms have evolved, the Internet has created worldwide trends and challenges. For example, around 2010 the Cinnamon Challenge and the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge were huge trends that became popular throughout the world by using one single hashtag. Now, the trends have become more strategic and politic especially with the app, Tik Tok.

An account on Tik Tok posted a video explain how if users went on Trump’s website and rsvp’d for a spot at his next presidential rally then the event would reserve a spot for that person. Thousands of users saw this information and quickly rsvp’d for the event in hopes that when President Trump were to arrive, that he thought he would be entering a full rally however, he arrived to an empty arena. The “prank” was so bad that President Trump wanted to investigate more on the app and see if they could ban it from the United States. By just posting one video, the video went viral and influenced hundreds of thousands of Tik Tok users to sabotage a presidential rally.

Not only did social media play a little prank on the President of the United States however, it also influenced young adults to go out and vote. Many celebrities like; Billie Eilish, Tana Mongeau, and David Dobrik used their social media presence to influence their followers to register to vote. Some celebrities also would do giveaways on proof of registration. By using their social media platforms, the United States had one of the most largest vote turnouts.

Social Media can impact alot of different aspects on our lives. From important events like the 2020 Elections to our healthy. Tik Tok is one of the most popular and influential platforms out right now and in some ways it plays a very positive role however, can also impact society in a negative way as well. For example, a trend or challenge I’ve seen on Tik Tok is sharing weight loss tips and tricks. The problem with these trends is how quickly users will try them and how fast these videos go viral. A doctor does not approve many of these tips however; users are very quick to try them out. Tik Tok videos also aren’t just posted only to Tik Tok but can be saved and uploaded to Instagram and Twitter making it more accessible to any user on any social media platform.

It’s very interesting how social media can influence the world and the only creditability it has if the amount of views or likes there are. Each form of social media has different ways it can control our society. For example, Instagram has more of a physical affect on society. It’s how we view ourselves and how we main try to precieve ourself on social media. Twitter influences users through news and quick message like posts to inform our society. Whereas Tik Tok is very trend based and is used a lot with how companies choose to market themselves. Tik Tok throughout these past 8 months has played a large role as to why certain songs have become popular or lifestyles hacks.

As we continue to evolve with technology, social media will continue to play a role in how we make our decisions and/or influence why we dress, act, and eat. Especially this year, with the 2020 election and how much our generation depends on social media, in some ways it is just the start of more news traveling through social media. We as a society have seen how powerful and effective information on social media can be and will continue to become.
