The First Cold War

The Cold War dominated global politics between the end of the Second World War and the early 1990s. At the forefront of this war was the threat of thermonuclear war. After the United States developed and used the first atomic weapons against Japan in 1945, it was only four years later that Stalin’s Soviet Union tested their first atomic bomb.

Of course, the cold war could be said to have started even before nuclear weapons were developed. The alliance between the U.S. and Britain in the west with the Soviet Union in the east against Nazi Germany was an alliance of convenience rather than mutual friendship. During the latter states of the war, when the Red Army was pushing the Wehrmacht back towards Germany, Stalin made sure to capture as much of Eastern Europe as he could before reaching Berlin. He was already planning ahead for the creation of Soviet Republics.

However, 1949 was possibly the most pivotal year setting the stage for the Cold War. In addition to the Soviets testing their first atomic weapon, China also fell to Mao Zedong’s communists after decades of fighting both the nationalists and the Japanese. That brought an enormous population under communist rule and greatly expanded the number of countries bordering communist countries, which would greatly affect later wars in places like Korea and Vietnam.

The Second Cold War

Does this mean we are on course for a second Cold War? Or perhaps we’re already in one? What should be done about this?
