When I wake up in the morning, I first reach for the switch to turn on the lights. Most of the time, I am unhappy with the bulb lights during those waking-up hours. Even though one of my bulbs begins…
As I am walking in my 25th anniversary of being a police officer for the greatest department in the nation, I’d like to share some advice to young police officers as well as those thinking about a career in policing.
These are things I have embraced to stay out of trouble and have a good career thus far.
I never lied
I never broke the law to obtain justice, even for the most evil suspects I’ve dealt with.
I try to treat everyone as I’d want them to treat my loved ones or me if I were being detained
When the fight is over, you stop fighting. No need for extras.
I never sacrificed my integrity, even if it left me standing alone.
I was more successful when I focused less on quantity of arrest and I focused on quality. (Focus on arrest that can actually do damage to the criminal element and better the community you serve. Numbers are for ego. Effective and focused policing is for the safety of those you serve.)
How you treat the community you serve may protect you better than your vest and gun can.
Treat those the world considers unimportant as you would a Hollywood celebrity or dignitaries.
And with most situations, remember
If time gives you time, take all the time you need.
God bless. Remember, the job is what you make it.
