Moments of Love

Something happened and my heart stopped. And then it started again, radiating a love so simple and profound that I felt healed and whole again. All because he said I love you.

It was late one evening and I was ready to call it a night.

“It’s bedtime!” I announced tiredly in the living room.

A cry rang out and Borey, my youngest boy and twin, protested.

“No, I not finish watching yet,” he whined and clutched the remote control tightly. He was lying on the couch, holding a milk bottle in his right hand and the remote on his left. Too tired to argue, I headed to the bedroom and noticed Boran, the older of the twins, quickly jumping off the couch. With one hand, he grabbed his blanket and the pillow on another, trying to follow me.

I stopped to wait and helped him carry this favorite blanket, one that was a size too big for his little hands to hold. He dropped the pillow on his side of the bed, the right corner of our California king-size bed, one that we have shared since his birth. As I lay next to him, I could hear him gulping down the milk, and before long, he handed his empty milk bottle to me. As I took the bottle, he turned to me and said solemnly,

“I love you, mommy.”

Surprised, I felt my heart stop. And start again, this time with a warmth radiating from within and spreading like a cloak of love healing my tired and worn body. He has never said that to me before.

Before I could figure out what was happening, he had wrapped his little hands around my neck and gave me a tight hug. At that moment, it felt like everything was going to be okay.

Grateful, I returned his hug and a gentle kiss on his forehead.

“I love you too baby,” I whispered. He beamed back, his eyes lighting up in appreciation and love.

We held on to the hugs for a few more moments before he decided to let go, turned to the left side and promptly closed his eyes. Just as quickly as it happened, it was over.

I wondered how he knew this was what I needed. Just a simple word and a heartfelt hug.

“Mommy,” Borey whispered from the doorway, one hand with a bottle and other holding his blanket. He was ready for bed.

I smiled and waved him in. I was in for another moment of love and joy, and I couldn’t be happier.
