The attention we seek

In my DTC class we watched the documentary, “ The American Meme”. In the film it goes around four main people who are trying to make it on to their way of fame. Each of them have made comments that it is hard being a social media giant and make it so it will sustain you.

Each of the people have admitted how hard it really is to try and become famous through the digital world with social media. Brittany Furlan in the film, says she is always looking to make new snippets or some recreated photo of a celebrity. Once she posted a photo she did, she waited and said that this is the death of me in having to wait and see how well the photo did.

With every post that the creators made and put out into the cyber world they have said they are always thinking of how can I make this better to get more views and get more attention. The attention is what they want and need to make themselves feel like they are someone in the world who matters, when most people may not even remember who they are in a couple of days. The attention is what drives all of the content creators to doing things they never would have thought to do on their own. People are always looking for the new and important thing that will follow a trend, then they will follow it or see if they can make it better to get more attention.

Us as a society have put so much effort into social media and marketing it as a great way to meet new people, which it is great to meet new people if you look for that. For all the creators who are looking for fame or that brief span of fame from a video or photo, they strive to do what they can meaning it may be even crazier or just as funny. Once they see that they get all this attention it is the one thing that they just want to have and nothing else and seems like they will do anything to try and stay on top.

One of the creators Kiril, who coined the term “Champaign facial”, in the film he even says that he always has to think of new content and ideas that would make people try to follow him. He says later after being asked how much longer he’ll be able to play to the social media game, he responds to maybe about another year. People will follow for a time and then people get bored and want to move onto something new and exciting and those are the times that we live in society as we live on social media.
