Transplant Guy Discusses a Major Problem with Therapists

At the risk of getting too personal, I feel inordinately compelled to share my trepidation concerning the world of psychiatry and therapy. After deep discussions with close friends and family, including those who suffer greatly from the mental troubles many people are experiencing at this time in U.S. history, there is a dangerous conundrum which exists in the doctor/counselor patient relationship.

This quandary may partially explain why many people are afraid to reach out for help even though in their deepest consciousness they are crying out for relief from suffering.

It goes like this:

First and foremost, #1 is an absolute and must be reported when discovered.

#2 is problematic, however, because how can a person truthfully engage in counseling and seek help if that person cannot talk about all the factors and options floating through their mind in their struggle with depression, anxiety, PTSD, anhedonia, et al. Thoughts do pop up in one’s mind out of nowhere and hopelessness is a major driver in thought development.

The fear of being turned over to legal authorities for laying out honest concerns makes therapy a non-starter for many in a country ridden with people who need professional guidance.

Is a real problem, my Medium friends. Makes me wonder, if the troubled patient could have talked openly with their therapist without the fear of being imprisoned in some type of sanitarium or asylum; or made to live in a situation where group sessions are mandatory when the sick person has agoraphobia, as an example, in other words a nightmare scenario, where is this very troubled person to turn? In this scenario, the patient, possibly paranoid as part of the disease, may view the therapist as some sort of narc, rightly or wrongly, a reporter to Big Brother. Therefore, the sick person hedges on honesty rendering…
